Creole Roots is an educational and cultural initiative dedicated to preserving the layered
history of Louisiana's Creole people... shaped by African, Native American, French, Spanish,
Caribbean, and American influences. Rooted in New Orleans, Creole Roots centers the often-
overlooked contributions of Free People of Color, Native Americans, and enslaved Africans
whose labor, culture, and service helped define the region and the nation..
.
At the heart of Creole Roots is the history of the Battle of New Orleans and the War of 1812,
where Free People of Color played a decisive role in defending the city and securing one of
America's most significant early victories. Their service, leadership, and sacrifice have too
often been marginalized or erased from mainstream historical narratives..
.
Built upon a multi-generational family archive dating back to the 15th century, Creole Roots
brings together rare photographs, military records, land claims, church registers, and
personal documents preserved across generations. These materials are paired with
scholarly research and community storytelling to create a living archive that connects past
to present..
.
Creole Roots is more than genealogy. It is a platform for cultural memory, public education,
and intergenerational dialogue. Through digital archives, exhibitions, and educational
programming, the initiative serves scholars, students, families, and communities seeking a
deeper understanding of Louisiana's Creole identity..
.
Our long-term vision includes the development of a Free People of Color Museum, designed
to create jobs, support education, and serve as a cultural anchor that honors resilience while
inspiring future generations.
